You might remember that a few months ago I wrote about our daughter Danielle and the challenges she faced as a newly minted college graduate looking for a job in this difficult economy.
Today, I am delighted, overjoyed and thrilled (do I sound happy?) to report that this past Monday, Danielle started a full-time job (with benefits) as a fashion assistant with a NYC based women's clothing firm.
So far, as you can tell by her smiling face above, she is loving her job and every night entertains us at dinner with her "reports of the day".
Three interesting lessons from her job search that I wanted to share:
1) Almost all of her friends are now employed after a summer of looking, with the majority of offers happening during the second part of August. Despite a tough economy, it appears to have taken most of them three months of active job search to start generating offers. 2) As you may recall, Danielle and five friends banded together to form Grads 4 HIre, an "odd-job" company that provided them some income while they looked for "real" jobs. A win-win all the way around and a fabulous talking point during interviews. Working every day gave the girls structure, a bit of income and kept their spirits up during a difficult transition. The "odd" jobs also generated several leads towards more interesting options. 3) Under the category of "I never would have predicted this" Danielle's job happened as the result of a recruiter pulling her resume off of Monster.com. Statistically the odds of that happening are less than 5 percent (at best). I would never advise anyone to just post their resume and wait, but this just goes to show you that you need to work all the angles in the job search.
You just never know when the right combination of ingredients will result in the creation of the perfect job.
Congratulations Danielle!

I liked this information very much as it's greart to read about those who succeed, i.e. who get the job. But I think that in the case of your daughter, it couldn't be any other way round as you've said yourself they had their site and having at least some job makes you disciplined.
